Perfect Rug Size Guide: Find the Right Rug for Every Room
Choosing the right rug size can transform a room, making it feel cohesive, balanced, and inviting. In this guide, HAUS walks you through selecting the perfect rug size for each room — from kitchens to bedrooms and even outdoor spaces. If you’re also considering material and function, check out our Rug Features Guide to explore different rug types and their benefits.
Start by measuring your space carefully. Knowing the exact dimensions of the area you want to cover will make the selection process easier and ensure the rug complements your layout rather than overwhelming it.
A well-sized rug can anchor furniture, add warmth, reduce noise, and define zones in open-plan spaces. It also protects floors and can make rooms appear larger.
The HAUS rug collection includes the following sizes:

Living rooms
Your living room is often the hub of the home, and rug sizing plays a big role in how spacious and functional it feels. Whether your space is compact or open plan, the key is balancing coverage with flow. For long-term satisfaction, also consider rug durability. Read our Rug Care Guide for how to maintain rugs in high-traffic spaces.
Three common rug placement options:
• Full seating coverage: Rug extends under sofas, chairs, and tables, leaving 15–30cm around edges.
• Front legs only: Rug supports the front legs of furniture; ideal for medium-sized rooms.
• Floating rug: Sits in the center without touching furniture; works in modern or minimal layouts.
Tip: Always leave 40–75cm between the rug and the wall. A too-small rug can disconnect your décor, while an oversized one may overpower the space.

Dining rooms
When selecting a rug for the dining room, consider the table’s shape and size. The rug should extend 30–60cm beyond the edges of the table so that chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out.
· Common sizes by table capacity:
• 190cm x 290cm: Seats 4
• 240cm x 340cm: Seats 6
• 280cm x 380cm: Seats 6–8
• 300cm x 400cm or larger: Seats 8+, luxury layout
For tables in open-plan spaces, a large rug can help define the dining zone. Not sure which rug materials are best for dining? Visit our Rug Features Guide to see stain-resistant options.
Kitchens
Kitchens are high-traffic zones, so choose rugs that are durable and easy to clean. Runners work best in front of sinks and stoves, especially in narrow spaces. Make sure the runner is wide enough to prevent constant adjustment. Not all materials are ideal here — review our Rug Care Guide to find low-maintenance rug types.
· Suggested sizes:
• 60cm x 100cm: Small spaces
• 80cm x 280cm: Long galley kitchens or entryways

Bedrooms
A rug in the bedroom adds comfort and style. For full coverage, allow 45–60cm of rug on all sides of the bed. Alternatively, runners can be placed on each side or at the foot of the bed for partial coverage.
· Rug sizes by bed type:
• Single: 160cm x 235cm or 180cm x 270cm
• Double: 180cm x 290cm or 240cm x 330cm
• Queen: 240cm x 340cm or 280cm x 370cm
• King: 200cm x 290cm or 240cm x 340cm
• Super King: 240cm x 340cm or 300cm x 400cm
Leave 30–60cm of visible floor around the rug for a clean, spacious aesthetic, depending on the room size. Want something sustainable and stylish? Browse our Recycled Rug Collection for eco-conscious options.
