Handmade Rugs

Why choose a handmade rug?

Handmade rugs offer many benefits other than their aesthetic appeal. They’re traditionally made of high-quality natural fibres, making these foundation pieces more sustainable and imbuing them with longevity. Traditional techniques are used in the production of handmade rugs, making every rug unique. They’re crafted meticulously which adds to their durability, offering timeless appeal to your home for years to come. HAUS offers handmade rugs that make use of various techniques – the collection comprises handwoven, hand-tufted, hand-stitched, handloom, handloom-knotted, hand-knotted and hand-braided rugs.

Handwoven Rugs

Crafted using traditional techniques, these rugs are woven by skilled artisans, offering both authenticity and durability.

Hand-Tufted Rugs

Hand-tufted rugs are created by punching strands of yarn into a canvas. This allows for intricate designs and patterns, beautifully combining modern design and craftsmanship. Hand-tufted rugs have a soft, plush feel and are often available in interesting designs. They are a great choice for high-traffic areas.

Hand-Stitched Rugs

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, hand-stitched rugs feature layers of fibre sewn together, resulting in a distinct artisanal look.

Handloom Rugs

Utilising a traditional loom, these rugs are woven by hand to create seamless designs and patterns, offering both durability and aesthetic appeal.

Handloom-knotted Rugs

Making use of a blend of traditional handloom weaving and knotting techniques, these rugs are crafted with precision to deliver exquisite patterns and textures.

Hand-knotted Rugs

An ancient, labour-intensive technique is employed for these rugs, where each knot is tied individually, resulting in a piece of exceptional quality.

Hand-braided Rugs

Hand-braided rugs are made by intertwining strands of material. They feature a textured, rustic appearance and are highly resilient.

Outdoor and Undercover patio rugs

What is the difference between outdoor rugs and undercover patio rugs?

Fully outdoor rugs are made for full exposure to the elements. They’re usually made of weather-resistant synthetic material, which can handle prolonged sun exposure and rain. Undercover patio rugs are made to be used on a patio – where they are not as exposed to the elements. These rugs are usually composed of a wider variety of fibres than outdoor rugs.

Fully Outdoor Rugs

Outdoor rugs allow you to create an open-air sanctuary. They’re made of all-weather material that is resistant to mildew and mould, making them durable, easy to maintain and a breeze to keep clean. Made of 100% polypropylene and other synthetics fibres, fully outdoor rugs are hard-wearing and resistant to fading. These animal- and party-friendly rugs are an excellent choice for indoor living, and are recommended for high-traffic interior spaces like entryway and kitchens.

Undercover Patio Rugs

Undercover patio rugs are made of a blend of polypropylene and polyester. They’re a little softer underfoot and less resistant to fading compared with fully outdoor rugs. They are suitable for covered patios and indoor use.

Reversible Rugs

Reversible rugs can be flipped over and used on either side. They feature double-sided designs that offer versatile styling options.

Machine-washable Rugs

Machine-washable rugs are made of synthetic material that can be washed in a washing machine at 30°C; this makes them very easy to clean. For best results, choose a gentle cycle and mild detergent. Never iron or bleach a machine-washable rug. If convenience, durability and hygiene are important to you, these rugs will bring luxury and practicality to your home. They’re typically lightweight and durable, and are best placed in kitchens, entryways, nurseries/children’s rooms, the bathroom and dining rooms.

Choosing a rug with sustainability in mind

If you’re on the look-out for a rug with less negative impact on the environment, keep its longevity in mind. A high-quality rug made of wool, for example, will stand the test of time and stay beautiful for years to come, saving you money in the end. It’s also important to make sure that the rug meets your needs and complements your lifestyle – if you have pets and kids, a rug made from recycled material would be the more eco-friendly choice, and one that can withstand heavy use and regular cleaning.

Rugs Made With Recycled Materials

These eco-friendly rugs are made from material such as recycled plastic such as plastic bottles, recycled polyester and recycled cotton. Recycled PET rugs are soft, stain-resistant and durable, and are used both indoors and outdoors. These rugs are easy to clean. When choosing a rug made from recycled material, you’re able to enjoy a functional piece that is more sustainable.
